Scott Moy is a New York City artist whose focus is the revelatory portrait, executed in oil or acrylic paints, pastel, ink or charcoal.
Scott began working as an illustrator while still at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York. After earning a BFA, he continued to work in the advertising industry as an illustrator and graphic designer.
Throughout his tenure in advertising, Scott maintained his passion for the portrait, fascinated by the intricacies of the face and how features and expressions speak of the subject’s life as well as the world within.
Returning to fine art on a full-time basis, Scott's process reflects the alla prima technique. Alla prima is Italian, meaning at first attempt. It is a painting technique used with oil paints, which requires the ability to work fast. In this way, he is able to create a portrait in one sitting, which lasts on average three hours. Scott’s portraiture style is contemporary realism.
Scott offers drawing lessons privately in his studio. He can also be found at Spring Studio located in Soho, NYC, as a life-drawing instructor.
